Sambalpuri Day is celebrated on August 1, which is the birthday of the poet Sampalpuri Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar.
Satyanarayan Bohidar is known as a pioneer of Sambalpuri language and grammar. The poet was born on August 1, 1913 in Sunpur.
In 2013, on his 100th birthday, Paschimanchal (Koshal/Western Odisha) decided to celebrate Sampalpuri Day on its going on each year.
“Bohidar spread the art and culture of Sambalpur. So to honour him, we will be holding cultural events like dance, song, play, food and costumes,”
Bohidar was born in Sonepur. But he spent his creative years in Sampalpur, where he was bought by his aunt after the death of his mother. Bohidar graduated from Samablpur and began his career as a teacher in Baragarh.
He was a student at Sambalpur Zilla School and became a teacher at the same school. His first literary piece was published when he was in Class-X. It is believed that he laid the foundation of Sambalpur literature.
He encouraged others and his students to write in Sambalpuri. Many people consider Satyanarayan Bohidar as their mentor. Satyanarayan Bohidar played an important role in spreading the art and culture of Sambalpur.

Bohidar has also prepared a dictionary and grammar book in Sambalpuri. He is the author of “Kosali Bhasakosh”. His works include Tik Chahnra (1975), Ghavghavo, Ghuvkudu and many others. All these books were written in Kosali or Sambalpuri as well as many poems. One can have a spirit of love and affection for the Sampalpuri culture in his song. He also added a unique identity to the Sambalpuri literature.
Satyanarayan Bohidar died on December 31, 1980, but his great works will be always keep him alive in the heart of each Sambalpuria.
